Training in Athens | Day 2: Exploring History Through the Lens – Capturing Athens in 360-Degree Video

Updated: Oct 29, 2024

Day 2 of our immersive training program took participants out into the heart of Athens, where they had the chance to apply their skills in capturing historical environments through 360-degree video. With Athens’ rich cultural backdrop, today’s theme focused on history, allowing participants to explore iconic landmarks and create content that could one day bring these sites into classrooms worldwide.

The day began with a logistical overview and technical setup to ensure each team was prepared for on-site shooting. Instructors guided participants on camera positioning, ideal shooting angles, and adjusting for natural lighting conditions—key factors when working with 360-degree video in outdoor settings. Participants also discussed ways to approach historical content creatively, considering how to make the visuals both educational and engaging for students.

Mid-morning, the teams moved to their designated locations around Athens, including famous sites such as the Acropolis, Plaka, and the Ancient Agora. Here, they worked in groups, capturing footage that highlighted the grandeur and historical significance of these ancient landmarks. Each participant experimented with dynamic and static shots, learning to balance movement and stability to create a smooth, immersive experience for viewers. This hands-on session provided invaluable practice, as participants discovered how each environment’s unique qualities affected their footage.

In the afternoon, the teams regrouped for a reflection and feedback session. Back at the host organization, participants reviewed their videos, discussing challenges like managing crowds, balancing lighting in shaded areas, and capturing a seamless 360-degree perspective. They shared tips and insights with each other, gaining new strategies to tackle similar challenges in future projects.

The day wrapped up with an interactive demonstration where instructors showcased post-processing techniques for 360-degree video, providing an early look at how editing could enhance the raw footage captured that day. Participants left inspired and motivated, having seen how their work could evolve into polished, impactful educational content.

Day 2 offered a powerful blend of practical learning and creative exploration. As participants continue to build their technical skills, they’re also gaining a deeper appreciation for how immersive video can bring history to life. Tomorrow, they’ll apply these techniques to a new theme, diving into the field of geography. Stay tuned for more as we capture the landscapes and vibrant environments of Athens!
