Training in Athens | Day 3: Mapping the World – Bringing Geography to Life with 360-Degree Video

On Day 3 of our training in Athens, participants dove into the theme of geography, focusing on how to capture and represent natural and urban landscapes in 360-degree video. Today’s sessions encouraged participants to think critically about how immersive video can be used to teach geographical concepts, highlighting environmental diversity, urban planning, and natural resources through dynamic, interactive content.

The day began with a technical briefing and strategy session, where participants reviewed techniques for capturing varied geographic elements such as open landscapes, water features, and city structures. Instructors shared tips on framing wide spaces, managing lighting across different environments, and using panoramic perspectives to emphasize scale. Participants also discussed the educational impact of their footage, considering how these visual elements could help students understand spatial relationships, topography, and environmental diversity.

By mid-morning, teams set out to film across various Athenian locations, including Mount Lycabettus, the National Garden, and the bustling neighborhoods of Monastiraki and Kolonaki. Each location offered unique challenges, from adapting to changing weather conditions to managing audio for capturing the sounds of nature and the urban hustle. As participants worked to capture the city’s geographic diversity, they began experimenting with different angles, camera heights, and movement techniques to produce a sense of immersion that would make viewers feel like they’re physically present in each location.

In the afternoon, everyone reconvened for a review and critique session. Back at the training venue, participants analyzed their footage, sharing insights on managing environmental factors and experimenting with different compositions. They discussed how geographic visuals could be used in lessons to convey complex topics such as climate zones, urbanization, and natural landscapes, giving students a tangible way to explore these concepts.

The day concluded with an editing and enhancement workshop, where participants were introduced to techniques for refining geographic footage. Instructors demonstrated color correction, audio balancing, and editing transitions that maintain a smooth, realistic flow in 360-degree video. This session sparked new ideas among participants, who could now envision how their footage could evolve into engaging educational modules.

Day 3 was an inspiring exploration of geography’s visual potential, and participants left with both technical skills and a creative vision for how immersive video can make learning interactive. Tomorrow, they’ll tackle the theme of circular economy, exploring how immersive content can highlight sustainability and resource management in an impactful way. Stay tuned as we continue this journey into the world of 360-degree educational content!
